Don't Know Where to Eat in Singapore? Take This 8-Question Quiz, Get 15 Spots

Don't know where to eat? Take Makan Match at eventful-sg.com/makan-match: it is free, it asks 8 quick questions, and it gives you 15 Singapore spots that fit your answers in under two minutes (the page itself says 20 seconds), with no app to download. It matches across 2,172 places, from hawker legends to hotel buffets, and you do not need an account to see your list.

In this article
  1. How the 8 questions work
  2. Places the quiz might send you to
  3. Spots you can book straight from your results
  4. Which version of this question are you asking

How the 8 questions work

Every question is a two-button tap. Jelak or light. Aircon or outdoor is fine. Are you trying to impress someone. Buffet or no. Below $50 or above. Healthy or nope. Just one or two of you, or a whole group. Traditional or trendy. Then one last screen asks what you avoid: seafood, beef, spicy, or hotpot and steamboat.

Your 15 spots come back with a line on top that repeats what you said, so you can check it read you right. Each card shows the cuisine, the area, a $ to $$$$ price tier and a match score. If you want the full maths, our earlier piece on how Makan Match scores places goes through it.

Honest take: the questions are blunt on purpose. Nobody in a hungry group chat wants to rate their mood out of ten.

Places the quiz might send you to

The full index is huge, but these are some of the names in its hand-picked list, across every mood:

Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice, Maxwell Food Centre. Serving chicken rice since 1986. Closed Mondays. It comes up when you answer traditional and below $50.
Swee Choon, Jalan Besar. Dim sum since 1962 and open till 2am most nights.
Komala Vilas, Serangoon Road. South Indian vegetarian, established 1947.
Seoul Garden. A halal grill and hotpot buffet by its own site, for when you tap buffet and group.
Whole Earth, Peck Seah Street. Plant-based Peranakan and Thai, and per its own site a Michelin Bib Gourmand holder since 2016.
Burnt Ends. The splurge answer if you tap above $50 and date night.

My opinion: the hawker picks are where the quiz feels most like a friend talking. The splurge picks are correct but you probably already knew them.

Spots you can book straight from your results

Some cards carry a Book button. Those are Eventful Tables restaurants, and they only show up when they genuinely fit your answers. In my own run (light, aircon, date, no buffet, under $50), the top two were KANTIN at Jewel for Sarawak laksa and Epicurean Fusion in Kampong Glam for halal Italian. If you answer buffet and group, Family Mookata is the one to look out for.

Everything else links you out to Google so you can check hours and directions. For a bigger list by mall, our food guides cover the big ones.

Which version of this question are you asking

We wrote a separate guide for each common version of the question: what to eat today, where to eat tonight, date night, eating with friends, halal spots, cheap eats and supper after 10pm. Each one names real places from the quiz and says which answers get you there.

Good to know

· Answer for tonight, not for who you are. The same person can want jelak on Friday and light on Monday.

· Not feeling the list? Tap Take it again. Tied spots are shuffled, so a retake gives you some new names.

· Use the avoid screen. Ticking seafood or hotpot drops places whose cuisine or name says so.

· Check hours on the Google link before you leave the house. Some hawker legends close early or sell out.
