The best-known food in Chinatown sits in two hawker centres a five-minute walk apart: Chinatown Complex on Smith Street, which NEA describes as the largest hawker centre in Singapore with 703 stalls, and Maxwell Food Centre on Kadayanallur Street, home to Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice. This guide lists 16 places, with stall numbers, hours where the venue publishes them, and the nearest MRT exit.

It runs as a walk. It starts at Chinatown MRT on the North East and Downtown lines, where Chinatown Point and People's Park are right at the exits, then crosses into Temple, Sago and Smith Streets, and finishes south at Maxwell, which has its own station on the Thomson-East Coast Line. Many stalls here post hours only on their MICHELIN listings, so check closures: Lian He Ben Ji closes Mon and Thu, Xiu Ji, Tian Tian and The 1950's Coffee close Mon, Maxwell Fuzhou closes Sun. Plan around each stall's hours: the claypot rice only opens at 3pm. Check the stall's socials if you are making a special trip.

Stall numbers come from each stall's MICHELIN Guide listing or the mall directory, and hours from the venue's own site, checked on 15 October 2026. NEA closes each hawker centre for a few cleaning days in each quarter, so look at NEA's closure list before a long trip.

The list

1. Song Fa Bak Kut Teh (Chinatown Point)

OPEN133 New Bridge Road, #01-04, Chinatown Point · connected to Chinatown MRT

Teochew peppery bak kut teh in an air-conditioned shop on the ground floor of Chinatown Point, the easiest sit-down meal right off the train. Song Fa's own site says the 2026 Bib Gourmand went to its New Bridge Road branch, not this one. Pork ribs, so not halal, and it opens at 10.30am on weekends.

🍽 Peppery Teochew bak kut teh, pork  ·  ⏰ Mon to Thu 11am to 9pm, Fri 11am to 9.30pm, Sat 10.30am to 9.30pm, Sun 10.30am to 9pm

2. Segar Restaurant

OPEN133 New Bridge Road, #B2-39/40/41, Chinatown Point

The halal tze char answer in Chinatown, two floors under the street at Chinatown Point. MUIS lists Segar Restaurant at 133 New Bridge Road as halal certified; the menu leads with tze char and seafood, curry fish head included, so this is where a mixed group of friends ends up sharing plates. Ask to see the certificate at the counter if certification matters to you.

Their own site calls it Singapore's foremost traditional mooncake bakery, and the Sago Street shop sells the everyday Cantonese pastries too: bei teh soh, pineapple tarts, moloso and the little egg cup cakes in the photo. Buy a bag for the walk or a box to bring home. It opens at 9.30am, so it also works as a first stop.

7. Chinatown Complex Market & Food Centre

OPEN335 Smith Street, food centre on Level 2 · about 3 min from Chinatown MRT Exit A

NEA's own description calls it the largest hawker centre in Singapore, 703 stalls in all, with 226 of them cooking food upstairs. That is too many to browse hungry, so pick two or three stalls from this list before you climb the stairs.

Yong tau foo in a clear ikan bilis soup, the light lunch in a building full of heavy ones, and also a MICHELIN Bib Gourmand for 2026. You pick your own pieces from the tray, so the price depends on how many you take. A morning stall, done by early afternoon.

Quick answers

How do I get to Chinatown's food centres by MRT?

For Chinatown Complex and People's Park, take the North East or Downtown Line to Chinatown MRT. One exit comes out on Pagoda Street; check the station map. It is about a three-minute walk to Chinatown Complex. For Maxwell Food Centre, Maxwell MRT on the Thomson-East Coast Line is about two minutes away.

Is there halal food in Chinatown?

Yes, but you have to look for it. MUIS lists Segar Restaurant as halal certified, in the basement of Chinatown Point. In the hawker centres, certification is per stall, so look for the MUIS certificate at each stall rather than assuming.

What is the cheapest good meal in Chinatown?

A hawker meal at Chinatown Complex or Maxwell Food Centre. Yong tau foo at Xiu Ji, claypot rice at Lian He Ben Ji and chicken rice at Tian Tian are all hawker-priced.

Where can a group of 8 to 10 eat in Chinatown?

Yum Cha on Trengganu Street is the easiest: it is a sit-down dim sum restaurant and their own site recommends booking. Segar Restaurant at Chinatown Point suits a mixed group that needs halal food.

What is open late in Chinatown?

Not much after 10pm. Mei Heong Yuen at Chinatown Point runs to 10pm daily, Nanyang Old Coffee stays open till 9pm on weekends, and Song Fa at Chinatown Point closes at 9.30pm on Fridays and Saturdays. Most hawker stalls close well before that.

Is there parking near Chinatown Complex and Maxwell?

Chinatown Point and People's Park Complex both have car parks, and both are a short walk from Chinatown Complex.
