Decker's smash burgers and Ling Tang Claypot Coffee both get 9/10 in part 1 of our brutally honest Kuala Lumpur food ratings. Damascus by WOLO Hotel and Koori Dessert get 8, Empire Sushi gets 5, and Gerai Ayam Gepuk 47 comes last with 4.
Decker's, 9/10. One of the best smashed burgers we have had, full stop.
Ling Tang Claypot Coffee, 9/10. Hands down the best coffee we have had in our lives. We are not being dramatic.
Damascus (WOLO Hotel), 8/10. Pretty damn good. The meat was tender and every dish was full of flavour.
Koori Dessert, 8/10. A surprise. Really nice bingsu, and the ice itself is flavoured all the way through, not just plain ice under a topping.
Empire Sushi, 5/10. This is not real sushi. Fine if you know that going in.
Gerai Ayam Gepuk 47, 4/10. Pretty bad ambience and the food was quite average.
Same format as our Genting Highlands food ratings, where a rest stop got a 1.
Yes, the caption says ayam gepuk on my feed, and then the ayam gepuk got the lowest score. That is the joke. It was on our feed, it just did not make it onto our list.
The comments had opinions too. One reader said calling Empire Sushi bad and Damascus good cost us all credibility. We stand by both. If you want the dish itself explained properly, our ayam gepuk explainer covers what gepuk means and what a set should cost.
Decker's has an outlet inside REXKL at 80 Jalan Sultan, which we covered in our Decker's at REXKL piece.
Ling Tang is in Cheras Business Centre, off Jalan Cheras, and it is closed on Thursdays. Our Lingtang Claypot Coffee guide has the full address and hours.
Damascus is on Jalan Bukit Bintang next to WOLO Hotel, so it fits easily into a Bukit Bintang evening. We could not confirm addresses for Koori Dessert or Gerai Ayam Gepuk 47 from their own pages, so check Google Maps before you head out.
· Do Ling Tang any day but Thursday, that is its day off.
· Damascus and Bukit Bintang go together, plan it for the evening.
· Order bingsu at Koori Dessert to share, the 8 was for the ice itself.
· Want sushi in KL? Pick a proper sushi place, not a conveyor chain.
