The scores, and what to order

Beauty in the Pot, 10/10. Hotpot at 1,700m with the mountain air outside is unfair on every other restaurant up there. It is on Level 5 of SkyAvenue.

Peranakan Place, 9/10. We went back three times in five days. Order the laksa and the nasi pandan kukus. It is at Genting Highlands Premium Outlets, open 10am to 10pm daily, so it is the one down at the outlets rather than up at SkyAvenue.

01Mo Cafe, 6.5/10. Food was alright. The ambience is the reason to sit there.

Taibae, 3/10. Probably the most tasteless thing we ate on the trip. Possibly a bad day.

Ming Ang rest stop, 1/10. Eat there for sustenance only.

Why the hotpot wins and it is not really about the food

Genting sits high enough that the temperature does the work. Hotpot in Singapore is a commitment. Hotpot at 18 degrees with mist outside the window is just correct.

Beauty in the Pot is a Singapore chain, so you are not eating anything you cannot get at home. You are eating it in the one climate where it makes sense, which is worth the trip up on its own.

Plan around the rest stops

The rest stop food on the way up is not the point of your holiday, so eat before you leave KL or wait until you are up top.
