Steamboat and BBQ in one pan

Mookata is the answer to the steamboat-or-BBQ argument. The pan has a grill dome in the middle and a soup moat around it. Meat juices run down into the broth, so the soup gets better every round. Cook chicken and beef on top, seafood and vegetables in the soup.

If you have never done it, our first-timer's guide to mookata walks through it. The short version: it is a steamboat that also grills.

Why the halal part matters here

Most mookata places in Singapore cook with pork and pork lard. Family Hakata is the sister of Family Mookata with all of that taken out: marinated chicken and beef, no pork, and a real certificate, MUIS certified under the Eating Establishment Scheme (certificate EEHK26070000062).

That means one table for the whole group, no checking. We explain how to tell certified from halal-friendly in is mookata halal?.

What goes in the pot

The buffet lists baby lobster, flower crab, crab claw, tiger and vannamei prawns, scallop, oyster, clam, mussel, cockles, gong gong, salmon, patin and dory, plus squid four ways. Then cheese tofu, curry fishballs, lobster balls, fish roe, vegetables, enoki and four other mushrooms, rice, maggie and tang hoon.

Sauces are a cheese dip and homemade chilli. Dessert is ice pops, fruit and cake. Our tip: throw the crab claw and clams into the soup first. They flavour the broth for everything after. More on the seafood in the Family Hakata seafood guide.
