Most mookata is not halal: the classic Thai version is built on pork, and the dome is usually greased with pork fat. Family Mookata is not halal. Its sister brand Family Hakata at Blk 728 Ang Mo Kio Ave 6 is MUIS certified (certificate EEHK26070000062), $19.90 nett for adults.
The name gives it away: mu kratha means pork pan in Thai. Pork belly is the classic meat, and a chunk of pork fat on the dome is how you stop things sticking.
Family Mookata, for example, has pork belly, garlic pork and pork lard cubes for the pan on its counter. Great for some, a hard no for others.
New to the whole format? Here is how mookata works.
"No pork, no lard" is the stall's own word. It is not a MUIS certificate.
Muslim-owned tells you who runs the place, not where every ingredient came from. Plenty of people are fine with that, plenty are not.
MUIS certified means the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore has certified the eating establishment and issued a certificate. For a mixed group, it is the one answer nobody has to debate, and it is what Family Hakata in AMK has.
Look for the certificate on display at the stall. Check that the name and address on it match the place you are sitting in.
Newer certificates, like Family Hakata's, carry a QR code you can scan. MUIS also lists certified eating establishments on its own website, so you can search by name or address before you go.
Family Hakata is Family Mookata made halal, certified under MUIS's Eating Establishment Scheme. Pork is out; marinated chicken and beef are in.
The rest of the format stays: live seafood, baby lobster and flower crab, a lok lok station on the house, cheese dip and homemade chilli sauce. It is $19.90 nett for adults and $14.90 nett for kids 100cm to 140cm, at Blk 728 Ang Mo Kio Ave 6, #01-4200, inside KPH1990 Coffeeshop.
