Before Eventful was anything, the inbox looked like this: a column of double-ticked messages asking restaurants what their biggest pain point was, and no replies. Screenshot after screenshot of Seen, Seen, Seen, Sent, Sent. Plus a friend asking, reasonably, whether this would outperform the agency work in the long run. This is the part nobody posts, so here it is.
Same message, different bar, different restaurant, different dessert place. "What's your biggest pain point right now?" Offering to work at $500. Offering to work to whatever their budget was.
Read on 11 August 2025. No reply. Then the next one. Then the next one.
The doubts were not from strangers either. A friend asked directly whether income for Eventful was better now but would it outperform in the long run, which is a fair question and a hard one to answer when you have no numbers yet.
None of this is a sob story. It is the actual base rate of cold outreach, and knowing that in advance is worth more than any hack.
The thing that eventually worked was not a better cold message. It was having something people could see: an audience, a track record, a reason to reply.
That is the uncomfortable order of operations. You build the thing that makes people answer you, and then the answering gets easy. Before that, you send hundreds of messages into nothing and most of them stay unanswered forever.
The longer version of how the account itself grew is in how we got to 90,000 followers in a year, and where the numbers ended up is in 10 million monthly views.
If you are in the ghosted-inbox stage right now: it is not a signal about you, it is what the stage looks like.
· Cold outreach with nothing behind it has a brutal reply rate. That is the base rate, not a verdict on your idea.
· Build the thing that makes people reply first. The outreach gets easy afterwards, not before.
· Keep the screenshots. They are worth more later than they feel at the time.
Not from cold DMs. The early outreach was largely ghosted. What changed it was building an audience first, so there was a reason for merchants to reply.
Variations of asking each venue what their biggest pain point was, and offering to work around their budget, including a $500 offer. Most went unanswered.
