How @eventfulsg Got to 90,000 Followers in One Year

Before Eventful there was dropshipping, custom gifts and a marketing agency, and they all ended with nothing left and a stretch of being genuinely depressed. Eventful came after that, and the account passed 90,000 followers inside a year. This is Joston's own telling of it, so it is not the version where every step was a plan.

The businesses that came first

A dropshipping run selling retro handheld consoles. A custom gifts operation, which in practice meant a floor covered in bubble mailers and printed labels. Then a marketing agency, shooting content in restaurants.

They ended. What that looked like from the inside was sitting on the floor of an MRT station at night with nothing left and no plan for the next thing.

That period matters to the story because it is the reason the Eventful approach was different. There was no runway left to spend a year being precious about it.

The version with the ghosted DMs in it is here.

What the account did differently

The follower number is the outcome, not the method. What the account does is narrow and repeatable: cover the events and food that Singaporeans actually search for, first, and in a format that reads in three seconds.

That means the boring parts are the job. Being early to a launch beats being clever about it. A carousel where slide one states the thing plainly outperforms a witty one, every time.

Where that ended up is documented in the 10 million monthly views breakdown, which covers the specific tactics: leaning on a bigger topic, studying three-second hooks deliberately, and moving on fast when views are flat.

The failures are not a redemption arc. They were three businesses that did not work, and the fourth one did.

Good to know

· Being first to a launch beats being clever about it. Speed is the actual moat on a local food and events account.

· Slide one should state the thing plainly. Wit on the cover slide costs you the scroll.

· When a format's views go flat, move on rather than defending it.
