Choco roll, choco roll, London Choco Roll. Wen yao, chong yao, yong wu bi gao. Iiii can give you Gatsbyyyy. Yi fu ben lai gang gang hao. It's marvellous what Milo can do for you. If you read those in the tune and not in your normal voice, this post is for you, and 1,600 people did exactly that. Part 2 of the TV ad jingles that Singapore cannot unhear.
The London Choco Roll jingle is three words repeated until they lose meaning, sung by a very enthusiastic office full of people who have just been handed a snack, and it has been running in some form for as long as anyone can remember. Nobody has ever eaten a London Choco Roll without hearing it.
Mopiko is the mosquito bite ointment, and "wen yao, chong yao, yong wu bi gao" is the Mandarin line, mosquito bites, insect bites, use Mopiko, with a mother applying it to a child at a picnic. Every Chinese-speaking household in Singapore has one tube in a drawer and can sing the ad.
The Gatsby one is the Japanese hair-wax ad with the silhouette dancing on a white set, and the whole of Singapore learned "I can give you Gatsby" as a scream rather than a lyric. Our caption was "III CAN GIVE U GAATSUUBYYYY" and that is the correct spelling.
Scott's Emulsion is the cod liver oil, and "yi fu ben lai gang gang hao" is roughly "the clothes used to fit just right", from the ad where the kid grows out of them. Every parent who forced the orange-flavoured spoon on you also sang it.
Milo closes it out with "it's marvellous what Milo can do for you", from the sports-day-in-the-eighties ad with the sprinter, which is older than most of the people who still sing it and is still the reason Milo vans exist.
This was part 2. The last slide promised cartoon and TV theme songs next, and the series sits next to our childhood snacks tier list and the browser games we all played. If you have one we missed, it is probably the Gardenia one, and yes, it is coming.
· London Choco Roll is still sold in every 7-Eleven and Sheng Siong. The jingle is not included.
· Mopiko and Scott's Emulsion are still on Guardian and Watsons shelves, same packaging.
· The Milo ad is on YouTube under Nestle Singapore. Do not watch it at work.
· Part 3 is theme songs. Send us yours.
