KANTIN Headhunter Feast Platter: Is It Worth It for 3 to 5?

KANTIN Headhunter Feast Platter: Is It Worth It for 3 to 5?

KANTIN's Headhunter Feast Platter is $168 and made for 3 to 5 people: smoky barbecued meats and tiger prawns with vegetables, belacan dip, pansuh soup, purple rice and a lemongrass pandan drink. At menu price that is $56 a head for three, $42 for four and $33.60 for five. On paper, it makes the most sense at four or five.

What comes on it

This is the first dish listed under "Best sellers" on KANTIN's menu, priced at $168. The menu lists smoky BBQ meats and tiger prawns with vegetables, belacan dip, pansuh soup, purple rice and a lemongrass pandan drink.

It is built for sharing. Everyone reaches, nobody has to order. If you want the rest of the menu first, our KANTIN guide has every section.

Cost per head at 3, 4 and 5

Three people: $56 each. Steep for a casual dinner, fine for a birthday.

Four people: $42 each. This is where it starts to feel fair.

Five people: $33.60 each. The best maths on the platter, and the top of the 3 to 5 range on the menu.

These are menu prices. KANTIN has no discount at any time, so the number does not change with the slot you book.

Platter vs ordering a la carte

Say four of you build your own smokehouse spread: Kambing Asap ($22), Grilled Tiger Prawn, 5 pcs ($22), Sotong Bakar ($20), Longhouse BBQ Chicken Wings ($14), Gula Apong Chicken Satay ($14) and the Headhunter Pansuh Set ($32). That comes to $124, before rice, vegetables or drinks.

So the platter costs about $44 more. For that you get the pansuh soup, purple rice, vegetables, belacan dip and the lemongrass pandan drink included, and nobody spends ten minutes debating the menu. Our honest take: at four or five, take the platter. At three, order a la carte unless it is a celebration.

Who should skip it

Two people. You will lose. Get the Headhunter Pansuh Set ($32) and a Sarawak laksa ($24) instead.

Halal groups. KANTIN is not a halal kitchen and is not certified. Go to Family Hakata or Epicurean Fusion instead.

Vegetarians. The platter is meat and prawns. The Herbivore Pasta ($23) or Funghi Forest Pizza ($19) are your exits, but ask the staff about the sauces first, Bornean cooking leans on belacan.

Groups of up to 8 can book KANTIN free on Eventful Tables. For eight, the platter alone will not cover it, so add a few a la carte plates on the side.

Good to know

· Ask your server how many glasses the lemongrass pandan drink covers before you order extra drinks.

· For six to eight people, one platter plus a few a la carte plates is the usual move, but the platter is sized for 3 to 5, so do not skimp on the extras.

· Add the umai jellyfish ($12) as a starter while you wait for the platter.
