Botanic Gardens Heritage Festival, 5 to 13 September

Nine days at the Singapore Botanic Gardens and Fort Canning Park, and the headline this year is EnlighTEN, the Gardens' first light show, running across five spaces with projection and sound.

There is also Xinyao Lives On!, a two-hour homegrown-music concert under the NAC-ExxonMobil concert series, guided tours with the Gardens' own cultivators, and workshops including one where you extract plant DNA. Entry to the Gardens is free as always.

Worth knowing: the name trips people up. This is NParks' Botanic Gardens and Fort Canning festival, not the National Heritage Board's HeritageFest, which runs at a different time of year. If you are stacking a weekend, our Baybeats guide covers the other free festival running the same week.

Go for the light show after dark and the tours in the morning. Midday in the Gardens in September is a sweat you do not need.

Singapore River Festival opens 11 September

The 10th edition, themed The Quay Collective, and it splits the river into three: Entertainment Zone at Boat Quay, Expression Zone at Clarke Quay, Lifestyle and Wellness Zone at Robertson Quay. The launch is at Read Bridge on 11 September.

Expect back-alley projections, roving performances, acrobatics, light installations and an outdoor movie screening. The projections and the movie use the Cinewav app for audio, so bring earphones and a charged phone or you will watch a silent film.

Walking the river is free. A few add-ons are ticketed: a heritage boat ride and walk called Whispers of the Twin Quays, a self-guided MONOPOLY: HIDDEN Singapore trail, and Acai Social inside The Riverhouse at Clarke Quay.

One honest gap: Singapore River One has published the 11 September opening but not a closing date on srf.sg. We are not going to invent one. Check their programme page before you plan a late-September visit.

AL!VE Artisans Market and Public Garden, both free, both weekends only

AL!VE Artisans Market takes over the National Stadium concourse on 5 to 6 and 12 to 13 September, 11am to 7pm, with 30 brands selling handmade and small-batch things. It sits inside the wider National Stadium Experience, which opens the grounds up with sports try-outs and family activities, so you are not making the trip for the market alone. Sheltered, which matters in September. Stadium MRT (CC6) drops you at the door.

Public Garden is on 12 to 13 September, 1pm to 7pm, at Suntec Convention Halls 405 and 406 on Level 4, 1 Raffles Boulevard. Independent brands, designers and makers from around the region, free entry. It is indoors and air-conditioned, which is the reason it gets packed after 3pm. Go at 1pm if you actually want to browse.

Both are on the weekend of 12 to 13 September, and they are a 15-minute train ride apart, so doing both in one day is realistic if you start at Suntec.
