The JCube rooftop and the temp interchange, RIP

Everyone in the west has seen someone filming a musical.ly on the JCube rooftop. Not a TikTok. A musical.ly, which tells you exactly how old this memory is and roughly how old you are. JCube closed on 6 August 2023 after eleven years and CapitaLand is putting a 40-storey block called J'den there, due 2027, so that rooftop is not coming back. We wrote up the rest of that wave in 5 Singapore malls that closed down.

The other one nobody expected to miss: the Jurong East temporary bus interchange. It opened 17 December 2011, it was ugly, it was hot, and it was so much more convenient than what replaced it. It moved to a second temporary site on 6 December 2020 to clear the way for the Jurong Region Line and a proper integrated transport hub, JRL station due 2027. Nobody has ever missed a temporary interchange until they were walking an extra five minutes to the same bus.

Boon Lay stingray and KFC after swimming

BBQ stingray at Boon Lay Place Food Village always had the queue and it was always worth it. That one is still standing, which is the good news on this list. Go and eat it while the rest of Jurong gets knocked down around it.

Jurong West Swimming Complex is the bittersweet entry. Singapore's first sheltered Olympic-size pool, and if you were a kid there, the pool was the warm-up. KFC after swimming is the actual memory. Chlorine, wrinkled fingers, and a bucket. That combination hits different and every Singaporean who swam at an ActiveSG pool as a child knows exactly what we mean. It is still open, still closed on Tuesdays for maintenance.

Snow City is the one with a deadline

Snow City was a childhood fever dream. Real snow, in Jurong, next to the Science Centre, while it was 32 degrees outside. Half of us went once on a school trip and have been describing it to people ever since.
