The ten pairings, week by week

Week 1, 11 to 16 September: SpongeBob x Luffy and Smitty Werbenjägermanjensen x Brook. Week 2, 17 to 23 September: Patrick x Zoro and Larry the Lobster x Franky. Week 3, 24 to 30 September: Sandy x Nami and Plankton x Usopp. Week 4, 1 to 7 October: Squidward x Sanji and Mr Krabs x Jinbe. Week 5, 8 to 14 October: Gary x Chopper and Pearl x Robin.

Each pair comes out on the Thursday at 11am and McDonald's own Happy Meal page says while stocks last, no restocks promised. The dates, the toy rules and how to collect the set are in our main Happy Meal guide. This page is about which ones are actually good.

Ranked, best to worst

1. Squidward x Sanji. The blonde swoop over one eye, the cigarette-less cigarette pose, the suit. Someone at the design table understood both characters. 2. Patrick x Zoro. Zoro's whole running gag is getting lost, and Patrick lives under a rock. Three swords on a starfish should not work and it does. 3. Gary x Chopper. A snail in a reindeer hat. It will be the first of the ten to vanish, and it is not close. 4. Smitty Werbenjägermanjensen x Brook. Two skeletons, one of whom was number one. Deep cut, correctly used.

5. Plankton x Usopp. Small guy, enormous schemes, permanent failure. Fair. 6. Sandy x Nami. Both the competent one in a crew of idiots, so it fits, it is just not funny. 7. Mr Krabs x Jinbe. A crab dressed as a fish-man is fine. 8. Larry the Lobster x Franky. Two gym guys. Sure. 9. Pearl x Robin. A teenage whale as the crew's archaeologist is a reach. 10. SpongeBob x Luffy. The obvious pairing, and the comments' first question was still "where is Gear 5". Obvious is not the same as good.

Which weeks to actually queue for

Week 4 and week 5 are the ones. Squidward and Gary between them are three of our top four, and the final week has no restock behind it. Week 1 is already over, so if you want SpongeBob or Smitty you are on Carousell now. Weeks 2 and 3 are the ones you can wander in for on a Friday and still find.
