Shuu Cafe JB Review: The Cottage Cafe Rated Dish by Dish

Shuu Cafe is the cottage-style cafe at 203 Jalan Wijaya, Taman Abad, Johor Bahru, three minutes by car from KSL City Mall, open 10am to 6pm. Our verdict after one lunch: the rosti was an 8/10, the beef butter noodles a 7, the mushroom soup a 6, the taro choux creme brulee a 4 and the chocolate chip cookie a 2. Prices are close to a Singapore cafe, so we would not cross for it.

What we ordered and how it scored

Drinks came fast: an iced Americano and an apple passion jasmine tea, both good. The mushroom soup was creamy and light with a slab of brioche, a 6/10 from someone who is not a mushroom soup person. The rosti benny was the winner: fresh, properly crispy, and an 8/10 once you pair it with the sausage patty.

Beef butter noodles looked better than they tasted. The beef was tender and flavourful, the noodles were not soft and the sauce lacked the umami you expect, so a 7 carried by the meat. Dessert let it down. The taro choux creme brulee was great for the first bite of torched sugar and then plain, a 4/10, and the chocolate chip cookie was doughy where it should have been chewy, a 2.

Is Shuu Cafe worth the trip from Singapore

On its own, no. The space is the draw: yellow brick, a green door, wooden furniture, a bench outside, and everyone there was taking photos. The food is decent and the prices sit close to what you would pay at a Singapore cafe, which removes the usual JB reason. Shuu started as a patisserie in Dato Onn and moved to this cottage in Taman Abad in December 2025, adding mains.

It works as one stop on a bigger day. It is minutes from KSL, so slot it between lunch and the lok lok on our JB millennial itinerary, and order the rosti, the drinks and nothing sweet.

At a glance

📍Location: Shuu Cafe
Time: 10AM to 6PM daily

Good to know

· Order the rosti benny. Skip the desserts, or just get the canele.

· Closed Mondays per the cafe's own listing, 10am to 6pm other days. Check before driving.

· Grab from KSL is about 3 minutes. Walking is not realistic in the heat.

· Prices are close to Singapore cafe prices. Budget accordingly, do not expect JB value.
