What is in the NOMADS shrimp boil

A shrimp boil is a Southern US thing: shellfish, corn and potatoes cooked together and tipped out to share. NOMADS does its version as foil cooking, which suits a camping cafe. The menu lists prawn, clams, mussels, corn, potato and glass noodles.

The glass noodles are the local twist. They soak up the juices at the bottom, and that is the best mouthful in the pot. It is marked as a chef's recommendation on the menu.

How much it costs, and what to add

The Shrimp Boil Foil is $32 before tax, roughly $38.40 with GST and service. For two, add Lamb Skewers ($16) and Fried Broccoli with Wasabi Mayo ($13) and you have a full dinner for about $61 before tax.

If you want more shellfish, the Lala Clams ($19, with ginger, Shaoxing wine and baguette) is the cheaper side bet. The full menu with every price is in our NOMADS Seletar menu guide.

Is it a seafood boil like the bag places?

Not quite. The bag places sell you seafood by weight with a choice of sauce, and you eat with gloves. This is a fixed portion at a fixed price, in a pan, with corn and potato already in. Fewer decisions, less mess, and you get a lawn and camping chairs instead of a mall food street.

Our honest take: if you want a mountain of crab, go elsewhere. If you want a shrimp boil as part of a slow evening out, this is the better night.
