Sembawang Hot Spring Park: Singapore's Natural Hot Spring, Free, 7am to 7pm

Sembawang Hot Spring Park: Singapore's Natural Hot Spring, Free, 7am to 7pm

Singapore has a natural hot spring, and it is free. Sembawang Hot Spring Park sits along Gambas Avenue, open daily 7am to 7pm, with a four-tier cascading foot-bath pool fed by spring water that comes out of the ground at about 70°C and a collection point where people cook eggs. The caption said "gotta fight with the uncles for a spot if you want to go", and that is the single most accurate description of the foot bath at 5pm on a weekday.

What you actually do there

Sit on the edge of the cascading pool with your feet in. The water comes in hot at the top tier and cools as it steps down, so you pick the tier your feet can handle. Most people last about ten minutes at the top and then migrate down. The uncles have been going since before the 2020 revamp and they have their tiers, their towels and their spots. You will not win that fight, so go early or go on a weekday morning.

The other thing is the eggs. Bring your own raw eggs and a container, fill it at the hot water collection station, wait 20 to 30 minutes, and you have onsen eggs. NParks lets you do it; they just ask you to clear up after.

When to go and how to get there

7am to 7pm daily, free, no booking. The foot-bath pool closes for cleaning on Mondays and Thursdays from 11am to 2pm, which is exactly the window a first-timer would pick, so do not. NParks says the busy hours are weekday evenings 4pm to 7pm and all day on weekends and public holidays, and that matches what we saw.

Nearest MRT is Canberra on the North South Line, then a walk down Gambas Avenue. If you drive, the nearest carpark is at 114 Yishun Ring Road, about 450 metres away. No cycling, skateboards or PMDs inside the park, and groups over 20 need a permit.

It is a 1.1-hectare park, so the whole visit is under an hour unless you are here for the eggs. Pair it with the Sembawang pasar malam if one is on; we ate our way through the last one.

Good to know

· Go before 9am on a weekday. After 4pm it is uncles, towels and no space.

· Not Monday or Thursday between 11am and 2pm. The pool is closed for cleaning.

· Bring eggs and a container from home. Nothing is sold inside the park.

· Wear slippers you can take off fast. The pool edge is the only seating.
