From 11 October 2025, KOBASHI brought back its Mao Shan Wang durian sourdough doughnut at its South Bridge Road cafe, for a limited time. The Charcoal MSW Durian Sourdo'nut was $7 a piece and the MSW Durian and Gula Melaka version was $7.20, with boxes of 4 and 6 for both.
A black doughnut. The dough is coloured with bamboo charcoal powder and, per KOBASHI, fermented for 48 hours, which is what makes it chewier and a bit sour compared with the usual airy kind. Inside is MSW durian puree with vanilla chantilly, and the top got a dot of durian and edible gold.
The charcoal is not just for the photo. It keeps the durian from tasting like a wall of durian, which matters when the filling is this heavy. If you met KOBASHI later at ARTBOX, that was the DONUT bundle with Brown Butter Maple and Nutty Rocher, a lighter pair.
Single pieces were $7 for the Charcoal MSW Durian and $7.20 for the MSW Durian and Gula Melaka. The boxes were $27 for 4 and $40 for 6 on the plain durian one, and $29 for 4 and $43 for 6 on the gula melaka one.
So the box of 4 saved you a dollar, and the box of 6 saved you two. Not a real discount. You bought the box because six people wanted one, not to save money. We compared the two flavours side by side in a separate piece.
Our first slide called it the first ever MSW durian sourdo'nut. The caption said KOBASHI was bringing it back. The caption was right: Time Out's write-up of the cafe's opening in August 2024 already listed a Mao Shan Wang charcoal sourdo'nut. Ours to fix, and fixed here.
We have not seen a published date for the next durian run. Today the shop at 79 South Bridge Road lists Monday to Saturday 10am to 6pm and Sunday 10am to 4pm, kitchen last orders an hour before close (kobashi.sg, checked 15 Oct 2026).
· Durian fillings travel badly in the heat. Eat one at the cafe and box the rest.
· The gula melaka one is sweeter. Get the plain charcoal one first if you are a durian purist.
· Watch @kobashi_sg for the next durian run. It was limited time in 2025.
In October 2025 the Charcoal MSW Durian Sourdo'nut was $7 a piece and the MSW Durian and Gula Melaka version was $7.20. Boxes of 4 were $27 and $29, boxes of 6 were $40 and $43.
Its cafe, Coffeehouse by Kōbashī, is at 79 South Bridge Road, Singapore 058709, a short walk from Clarke Quay MRT.
It was a limited-time item from 11 October 2025. We could not find a current date for it, so check @kobashi_sg before going.
