At Epicurean Fusion, 4 Jalan Klapa near Bugis, you get halal Italian fusion at weekday-dinner prices: a $38 beef Wellington cut pink in the middle, a $38 salmon Wellington, a black Nero Risotto at $26 and charcoal-base pizzas from $19. It is a Muslim-owned kitchen serving halal food, open Tuesday to Sunday from 12.30pm and closed Mondays. Here is what our post showed, dish by dish, and what we think.
Slide one and slide four are the same dish for a reason. The $38 beef Wellington is the reason most people walk in, and when we cut into ours the centre was properly pink, with a thick ring of mushroom duxelles under a golden pastry that held its shape when sliced. It comes with salad, mash and a pot of brown sauce on the side.
We already did the full breakdown in our halal beef Wellington piece, including why halal ones are so rare here. The short version: it takes 20 minutes, so order it first.
Our second slide is a full spread. A salmon Wellington ($38) sliced into three, the salmon wrapped in a green spinach layer, with a herb sauce and mash. A black Nero Risotto ($26) topped with prawns. A plate of whole prawns in red sauce with toasted bread. Two whole coconuts to drink.
That is a lot of food for two, and none of it is the Wellington. If one of you does not eat beef, the salmon version is the same price and gets the same 20 minute treatment.
The rest of the menu, with every price, is in our Epicurean Fusion menu guide.
Slide three is the side of the menu people skip. A charcoal-base pizza with chicken, red onion and cucumber, a Burrata Salad ($18) with pesto over rocket, a steak-topped pizza, and a big plate of fried gnocchi under grated parmesan with a red dip.
Our take: this is where the fusion earns its name. The Wellington gets the photos, but a group of four does better ordering one Wellington and filling the rest of the table from the pizzas, which run $19 to $33.
4 Jalan Klapa, Singapore 199316, in the quiet lanes of Kampong Glam. We called it a hidden gem in Bugis on the post because it is a short walk from Bugis MRT, but you will not stumble on it from the main road.
Booking is on Eventful Tables, where you pick a date, party size and time. Any sign-up offer for new diners is shown on the Tables sign-up page itself, so check there when you book.
