Two perspectives on 1942, two different visits

Sources checked 1 November 2026

Choose Battlebox for the decisions made inside an Allied command bunker; choose Reflections at Bukit Chandu for the Malay Regiment’s experience of the fighting at Pasir Panjang. They tell connected history from different vantage points.

This is a choice between two half-day outings, not a walking trail between the museums. Start with the subject that interests you and the access needs of your group.

Battlebox: choose basic entry or the audio experience

The bunker served as the defending Allied forces’ headquarters during the final days of the Malayan Campaign. Its underground rooms put the focus on the military command and the circumstances leading to surrender.

Basic entry is free but uses limited slots. Enhanced adult admission is S$20 standard or S$15 for Singapore citizens and permanent residents. The upgrade adds a 40-minute audio guide, two projection rooms and anaglyph glasses. Bring your smartphone and earphones.

A workable Battlebox morning

Reserve directly, then head to 2 Cox Terrace. Opening hours are Tuesday–Sunday, 10am–6pm, with last entry at 5pm. The operator suggests about an hour inside; allow extra time before your slot to find the entrance.

Use the toilets before entering: there are none inside the bunker. The nearest are at Fort Canning Centre. The original underground space is not wheelchair accessible. For the surrounding gardens afterwards, use our separate Fort Canning walking guide rather than assuming every park path leads to the museum entrance.

Bukit Chandu: understand the soldiers and the place

Reflections at Bukit Chandu commemorates the Malay Regiment and the Battle of Pasir Panjang in February 1942. Its setting also opens up the earlier history of the hill, the bungalow and the former opium industry nearby.

Give the interpretation your attention rather than treating the building as only a photo stop. Comparing the museum’s account with Battlebox on a separate visit offers a broader view: battlefield experience alongside command decisions.

Plan for the hill, then the accessible galleries

The museum is at 31-K Pepys Road, open Tuesday–Sunday, 9.30am–5pm, with last admission at 4.30pm. It closes on Mondays except public holidays. Singapore citizens and permanent residents enter free; standard adult admission for tourists and foreign residents is S$7. Payment is cashless.

From Pasir Panjang MRT Exit A, follow the museum’s official directions via Pasir Panjang Road and uphill Pepys Road. The museum estimates 15–20 minutes uphill. There is no on-site parking; Kent Ridge Park Carpark C is about 100 metres downslope.

The galleries and facilities are wheelchair accessible, with manual wheelchairs available at Visitor Services. That does not make the uphill street approach step-free or effortless: contact the museum about suitable arrival arrangements if needed.

Before leaving home

  • Reserve Battlebox even for the free option; bring identification for local rates.
  • Choose one museum and keep the rest of the day flexible, especially in wet weather.
  • Bring headphones for Battlebox and comfortable footwear for either approach.
  • Use the official visitor-page maps below rather than an unverified shortcut.
