Suntec City in 2006: Carrefour, Eng Wah and Food Republic

This is a nostalgia post: Suntec City with your family in 2006. Carrefour in the Entertainment Centre Atrium, Eng Wah Cinemas upstairs, the Tropics Atrium and Food Republic with the bookshelves. Most of that is gone now, which is why 9,000 of you liked it.

  2. Eng Wah, Food Republic and getting lost
  3. What Suntec looks like now

Carrefour was the whole trip

The comments decided this one fast. Carrefour was the legend. The croissants, the baguette samples you ate three of, the pretzel stall you could smell from two shops away.

Carrefour announced in August 2012 that it would shut its Suntec and Plaza Singapura stores, and it left Singapore by the end of that year. So if you remember pushing a Carrefour trolley at Suntec, you were there for the good years. We put Suntec in A-tier on our Singapore malls tier list, and this post is a big part of why.

Eng Wah, Food Republic and getting lost

Eng Wah Cinemas had the big red K sign over the atrium. The chain rebranded as WE Cinemas in 2011, and Golden Village runs the cinema at Suntec now. Same mall, different popcorn.

Food Republic was the one with bookshelves on every wall, and somebody in the comments still remembers a $7 chicken rice there. Then there was the flooring, the escalators everywhere, and the guarantee that your family would split up and someone would get lost between towers. Every one of us did at least once.

What Suntec looks like now

Suntec went through a S$410 million revamp from June 2012 to June 2015 and officially reopened in October 2015. That is the point where the 2006 version really ended.

The Fountain of Wealth is still there, and the mall is still where half of Singapore goes for a weekend expo. Our things to do at Suntec City guide has what is open today, including the fountain's current status. Same era, different mall: VivoCity in 2006.

Good to know

· Tell your parents about this post. They will remember the Carrefour parking better than you.

· Still get lost at Suntec? Use the tower numbers, not the shops.

· Next up from us: Marina Square in 2005.
