Joo Chiat Car-Free Day happened on Saturday 3 October 2026, from 3.30pm to 9.30pm, on Joo Chiat Road between East Coast Road and Dunman Road, and entry was free. No next edition has been announced: as of 5 October 2026, neither LTA nor the Katong Joo Chiat Business Association has said whether Joo Chiat goes car-free again, and LTA's World Car-Free Day event has taken a different shape every year. Here is what the day turned out to be, the zone map people keep searching for, and what to watch if you missed it.
It ran until 3 October 2026. We keep the page up because people still search for it and the details are worth having, but do not make the trip on the strength of this article. For what is actually on right now, see things to do this weekend.
More than 5,000 people turned up over the six hours, according to The Straits Times, with about 90 merchants set up along the half-kilometre stretch, and the crowd kept coming even with the haze that afternoon. It was LTA's World Car-Free Day 2026 event, co-created with residents, community groups and local businesses, with PPURPOSE as event partner, and it was the first time an area outside the Central Business District was closed to cars for the day. The street party through the middle of it was Joo Chiat Street Social, run by the Katong Joo Chiat Business Association with INVADE as placemaking partner.
Minister of State for Transport Baey Yam Keng was there and said the hope was that people would explore different parts of Singapore. Marine Parade GRC MP Goh Pei Ming called it a special milestone for the constituency. For the record, the road itself was shut from 8am Saturday to 2am Sunday, bus 16 and 16M were diverted and the four Joo Chiat Road bus stops closed for the day. All of that is back to normal now. If you are planning the rest of the month, our October 2026 picks has the other dates worth keeping.
This is the map people keep looking up, so here is how the street was laid out. From the East Coast Road end you hit the Music Zone first, with the AlibabaR stage and the Creo Live Stage, then a Picnic Zone with Smokey's BBQ, Dona Manis, 808 Eating House, Base Gelato and Guilt Free Food. At Fowlie Road was the Kids Zone (street circus, craft workshops, a play zone) and the Joo Chiat CC stage, which hosted the Kueh Party and a Heritage Fashion Runway by HDB.
Past that came the long Fitness Zone up to Duku Road: a Spartan boxing ring, SportSG's heritage fitness and inline skating trials, heritage dance fitness and pickleball, with Ann Siang Sounds on the stage there. Then a Wellness Zone with movement, breathwork and meditation classes from OJAS, Kindle Space, AYU Yoga and The Moving Body, a second Picnic Zone, the Pets Zone, and at the Dunman Road end a Music and Arts Zone with GooodHoood: Joo Chiat Edition by Hello Arigato.
Nothing to get in. Entry was free for everyone, and you paid only for what you ate and bought from the merchants. Joo Chiat Street Social gave out 1,000 physical Community Passes at participating shophouses from mid-September, free with any purchase or visit, and each one was good for one speciality coffee, chilled tea or craft drink at a redemption counter on the day. Games along the street handed out $5 Street Social vouchers, up to $5,000 in total, to spend at participating merchants. In the Pets Zone, The Gentle Vet and Meraki Vets ran free pet health checks and a pet first aid station.
Nobody has said so yet. As of 5 October 2026, LTA's World Car-Free Day page and the Katong Joo Chiat Business Association's Street Social page carry no next date, and the news coverage of the day did not include any promise of a repeat. We are not going to guess.
What the pattern tells you: LTA's World Car-Free Day programme has looked different each year. In 2024 and 2025 it was a month of guided tours, trails and app challenges with no road closed, and 2026 was the first time a street outside the CBD was shut for it. So a 2027 edition could be back in Joo Chiat, in another neighbourhood, or no street closure at all. The rest of the 2026 programme is still running: LTA's The Invisible City mobile game on CrowdTaskSG goes till 30 November 2026. When a date is announced, it will show up on LTA's World Car-Free Day page and on @kjcba first, and we will update this page.
World Car-Free Day falls on 22 September every year and has been marked around the world since 2000, according to LTA. Singapore's first Car-Free Day was on 21 April 2001, organised by the Singapore Environment Council, which asked drivers to leave the car at home for a day. The better known version is Car-Free Sunday SG, piloted in 2016 with roads in the Civic District and CBD closed on the last Sunday of each month. It paused after 2019 and came back on 17 March 2024.
LTA now runs World Car-Free Day as a programme rather than a single morning. In 2024 that meant tours like NParks' Lights by the Lake and NHB's HiddenSG trail in Katong-Joo Chiat. In 2025 it was rail and architecture tours plus a bingo card. In 2026 it grew into a mobile game, a 10,000-steps badge on Healthy 365, and the Joo Chiat street closure on 3 October, the first time the event left the city centre.
The shophouses that made the day are open all year. Take the Thomson-East Coast Line to Marine Parade, Exit 3, which LTA marked as the nearest station, or Eunos on the East-West Line if you do not mind a longer walk. Street parking on Joo Chiat Road is back, and the i12 Katong and Dunman Food Centre carparks are the easy options on a weekend.
· Missed it? Joo Chiat Road is a ten minute walk from Marine Parade MRT, Exit 3. The shophouses do not need a car-free day.
· LTA's The Invisible City game on CrowdTaskSG runs till 30 November 2026 if you still want the World Car-Free Day badge.
· Watch LTA's World Car-Free Day page and @kjcba for a next edition. Nothing is announced yet.
· If you went, the Kueh Party at the CC stage was the thing. If it comes back, that is still the one to catch.
Saturday 3 October 2026, from 3.30pm to 9.30pm, on Joo Chiat Road between East Coast Road and Dunman Road. It was a one-day event and it has ended.
Not announced. As of 5 October 2026, neither LTA nor the Katong Joo Chiat Business Association has published a next date. LTA's World Car-Free Day programme has changed format every year, so a repeat in Joo Chiat is not guaranteed.
