Johor Bahru One-Day Family Itinerary: Mid Valley Southkey Plan
The plan is simple: leave for the checkpoint by 7am, eat breakfast at Restoran Hua Mui in the old town, then spend the rest of the day inside Mid Valley Southkey and drive home after a grocery run at Village Grocer. It is one mall and one breakfast stop, which is the point. With kids, a day trip that involves three separate car parks is a day trip that ends in tears.
Leave at 7am, not 9am
This is the whole itinerary in one line. Drive to the checkpoint at 7am and you are through. Leave at 9am on a Saturday and the causeway queue eats the morning and half your patience. If you are coming from Singapore, the same logic applies to the trip back: leaving JB before 5pm or after 9pm is the difference between 40 minutes and two hours. Everything else here is flexible. This part is not.
Breakfast at Restoran Hua Mui
Hua Mui has been in JB's old town since 1946 and it is the sensible first stop because it is on the way in and it feeds everyone. Local kopitiam breakfast plus a western menu, so the fussy eater in the group has something. Their kopi and kaya toast is the standard order, and the chicken chop is what people actually queue for later in the day. Do not go here for lunch on a weekend unless you enjoy standing.
Then park once at Mid Valley Southkey and stay there
Level 3 is the family floor: VR+Zone for the older ones, Kiddytopia and Pinkfong Bebefinn for the little ones. Lunch inside the mall solves the picky-eater problem because the options are dense and cheap by Singapore standards. Then PALO Game World on Level 2 for the arcade portion of the day, which is where the parents quietly get competitive. Finish at Village Grocer for the snacks and groceries run before the drive back. One car park, whole day, no re-parking.
