Isan food is the cooking of northeast Thailand: sour, spicy salads, grilled meats and sticky rice. 2GATHER at Suntec Tower 2 has a separate Northern Thai and Isan menu, from Laab Moo at $13.90 and Som Tam Pu Pla Ra at $15.90 to Isan Sausage at $16.90 and a salt-crusted Grilled Fish Set at $28.90.
Isan dishes are built on three things: lime, chilli and fish sauce for punch, toasted rice powder for nuttiness, and sticky rice to eat it all with your hands. Less coconut, less sweetness than the Bangkok dishes most of us grew up ordering.

Salads: Laab Moo (spicy minced pork with toasted rice) $13.90, Som Tam Pu Pla Ra (papaya salad with salted crab and fermented fish) $15.90, Tam Tua (pounded long beans) $15.90, Nam Tok Kor Moo Yang (grilled pork collar salad) $18.90, Marinated Crab Salad $38.90.
Grills: Kor Moo Yang pork collar $15.90, Isan Sausage (12 pieces) $16.90, Grilled Chicken Butt $9.90, and a Grilled Fish Set at $28.90, whole fish stuffed with lemongrass and baked in a salt crust. Soups: Tom Saep Pork Ribs Soup $20.90. Sticky rice is $2. Prices are before GST and a 10% service charge, per the printed menu.
How to order it
Do it the Isan way: one salad, one grill, sticky rice for everyone. Laab Moo, Kor Moo Yang and two sticky rice is about $34 for two and tells you everything about the cuisine.

2GATHER is at 3 Temasek Boulevard, #01-505, Suntec Tower 2, Singapore 038983, 200m from Promenade MRT Exit C, open 11am to 10pm daily. Not halal. 10% off food on bookings from 11am to 8.30pm, Monday to Thursday. Each timing has 5 discounted bookings, drinks are not included, and the discount never runs on public holidays. Friday to Sunday is standard price.
