What Hainanese pork chop is

It is Singapore's oldest Western food. Hainanese cooks who worked in colonial-era kitchens adapted British dishes to local taste, and the pork chop is the one that stuck: pork pounded thin, crumbed with biscuit or bread crumbs, fried, then covered in a sweet-sour tomato gravy.

Peas, onions and potatoes are standard. So is the debate over whether the sauce should make the crust soggy. (It should, a little.)

What you get at Simon Says Cafe

The plate in the cafe's photo has the crumbed chop under a glossy tomato sauce with peas, carrots, onions and tomato, plus potato wedges and lettuce. It looks like the kopitiam version, plated properly.

Prices are not on the listing yet, so ask for the menu. The cafe also does a chicken cutlet curry risotto in the same tradition, covered in our curry risotto piece.

Why eat it here

Most places doing Hainanese pork chop are in old-school restaurants far from the CBD. This one is on the river at Boat Quay, a short walk from Raffles Place MRT, with a sit-down table you can book.

Bring a visitor who wants local food that is not chicken rice. Our Boat Quay food guide has more ideas nearby.
