The foie gras came by the tray

The reel opened on it for a reason. A full hotel pan of foie gras, seared in its own fat and topped up as fast as people cleared it. The hotel's menu called it unlimited pan-seared foie gras, done at its own seared station.

Wagyu on the grill outside

The second live station sat on the alfresco terrace. A chef grilled the Australian Wagyu there for you, alongside lamb chops, babi cho coo, ayam percik and chicken satay sausage. Our on-screen line was "and even Wagyu beef they'll grill for you". That was the station worth the trip outside.

Over 60 dishes, and the two we told you to eat

The reel's count was over 60 dishes, three live stations and seafood, with tiger prawns on ice. Our must-tries were the salmon sashimi and the beef rendang.

The rendang was the sleeper. Everyone walks in for foie gras, but a hotel Peranakan line that gets its rendang right tells you the kitchen is trying. We had it over blue pea rice with a side of orzo, which is not a combination any auntie would sign off on, and it worked anyway.

The desserts, and the durian pengat

The last stretch of the reel was desserts: a chocolate slice with sauce poured over, a plate of cakes, and durian pengat ladled out of a pot. The menu also listed shaved ice and ice cream with toppings. If you like durian, the pengat was the reason to save space. If you don't, you would have smelled it from the table.
