Din Tai Fung's Lola Lava Chocolate Bun, Reviewed (Sort Of)

Din Tai Fung's Lola Lava Chocolate Bun, Reviewed (Sort Of)

Din Tai Fung Singapore's Steamed Lola Lava Chocolate Bun is $4 for one piece, or $11.40 for three, and it is a molten chocolate centre inside a soft steamed bun dusted brown. We went in to review it and ended up rating everything except the bun, which is its own kind of review.

What we actually rated

KOL features, 3/10. Apparently we were excluded from the KOL list. That is not nice.

Service, 9/10. Genuinely friendly, and the owner was so nice he offered to come to our place. This is the highest score on the card and it is not close.

The name, 3/10. Still unclear why it is called Lola. It reads like a tribute to someone, which is either lovely or a translation artefact, and nobody at the table could settle it.

Upcoming items, 7/10. They have frozen items coming, which is the actual news buried in this post if you are the sort of person who wants xiao long bao in your own kitchen.

The bun itself did not get a score. It is $4, it is chocolate, it does the thing chocolate does.

Is it worth ordering

As a one-piece finisher after a full meal, yes. At $11.40 for three it is priced as a dessert to share, which is the right way to order it, because one bun each is more chocolate than most people want after dumplings.

It has been on the menu as a festive-season sweet, so it is not guaranteed to be sitting there year round. Ask before you plan your meal around it.

Good to know

· Order one piece to share after the mains. Three between two people is too much chocolate after a dumpling meal.

· It is a rotating sweet rather than a permanent fixture, so check the menu before promising anyone dessert.

· Frozen retail items were flagged as coming, so watch Din Tai Fung's own channels if you want them at home.
