Bukit Timah versus Dairy Farm: summit climb or nature trail?

Sources checked 1 November 2026

Choose the kind of walk before choosing a station. Bukit Timah is the summit option; Dairy Farm is better framed as a trail-and-education-centre outing. They are neighbouring parks, but the names are not interchangeable starting points.

This comparison keeps the routes separate so a casual group does not accidentally turn a short nature visit into a difficult hill circuit.

Choose one of three walks

The distances below are the official route lengths, not promises for your complete outing. Add the approach from transport, stops and the return journey. Use the official route comparison and Bukit Timah map before setting off.

The activity page and downloadable map use different route labels. Follow named paths and on-site signs, not a route number alone; the summit should not be treated as a flat beginner stroll.

Main-road summit approach

Bukit Timah Visitor Centre

NParks rates this 1.2km main-road route moderate. It is the clearest choice if the summit is your goal; plan the descent as well, rather than treating the published distance as your whole day.

The official 1.8km route is rated difficult. Choose it for the trail itself, not as a casual alternative when another member of the group wants an easier walk.

Wallace Trail: forest and local history

Hillview MRT to Wallace Education Centre

The Dairy Farm activity page describes 2.2km, easy to moderate, taking around one hour one-way. Allow additional time to return or arrange your onward transport.

Make Dairy Farm a focused outing

Follow the signed Wallace Trail rather than adding the summit automatically. Look for remnants of the former kampung, fruit trees and the viewing deck. The education centre is a useful planned endpoint, not a guarantee that everyone will want another forest loop.

Wallace Education Centre opens 8.30am–5pm, except Monday. Singapore Quarry has its own 8am–6.30pm hours; treat it as a separate option selected on the Dairy Farm park map, not an obligatory extra after the trail.

Match the entrance to the plan

For Bukit Timah, NParks lists Beauty World as the nearby MRT station and the visitor entrance at the end of Hindhede Drive. For Dairy Farm, Hillview is the nearby station; Carpark A is near Hillview, while Carpark B is near the education centre. Parking fees apply.

Agree on an exact meeting entrance. A message saying only “Bukit Timah” is not enough when the group could arrive on different sides of the hill. For a mixed-ability group, choose the return point before the walk, not after someone is tired.

Current works, accessibility and what not to combine

Checked on 1 November 2026: repeater-station removal works run from 13 July 2026 to March 2028. The official advisory explicitly says summit access remains open. Keep out of the worksite and follow signage around occasional vehicle movements.

The reserve’s wheelchair-accessible designation covers the exhibition-hall and toilet surroundings, not a step-free summit route. Pets are not permitted in the reserve. Cycling is not allowed on Wallace Trail. Bring water and covered walking shoes, leave enough daylight for the return, and stay on designated trails. The activity page’s Route 4 includes a Dairy Farm loop and is rated difficult; it is not the easy way to combine both parks.
