A Bras Basah afternoon for books, photography and local stories

Sources checked 1 November 2026

Build this afternoon around browsing rather than buying a stack of books on schedule. Bras Basah offers different kinds of discovery: specialist visual books, second-hand shelves, photography and film, and a public library with a strong Singapore focus.

Tuesday to Saturday gives the simplest overlap between the four stops. On Sunday, put Objectifs first because it closes earlier. Monday is a bookshop-and-library version, not the full four-stop plan.

Start with two very different bookshops

The shops share a building, but their stock and browsing styles are different. Do not plan around finding one particular title unless you have checked it with the shop. Leave room to find something unexpected instead.

Basheer Graphic Books

Bras Basah Complex, #04-19

A specialist stop for visual and design books. The complex’s own directory lists Monday–Saturday 10am–8pm and Sunday 10am–7pm. Head to Level 4 rather than assuming every bookstore is on the ground floor.

Evernew Book Store

231 Bain Street, #01-07

The independent second-hand bookstore offers a different browsing rhythm. Its own contact page lists Monday–Saturday 11am–7.30pm, with Sunday and public-holiday hours of 11am–6.30pm.

Add photography and film at Objectifs

Objectifs at 155 Middle Road is the visual-culture stop, rather than another general bookstore. Check its current programme and visitor information before you go so the exhibition itself, not just the building, gives the visit a purpose.

The centre opens Tuesday–Saturday noon–7pm and Sunday noon–4pm; it is closed on Mondays and public holidays. Exhibition admission is free, while individual programmes can have their own booking requirements or charges. Do not treat a workshop listing as a walk-in gallery event.

On a Sunday, begin here after opening and move to the bookshops afterwards. On a weekday, the order can be reversed. This small change avoids arriving at a closed gallery after a long browse in Basheer.

Finish with Singapore stories at Central Library

Central Library is in Basement 1 of the National Library Building, 100 Victoria Street. NLB’s current branch information lists 10am–9pm daily, closed on public holidays. It closes at 5pm on the eves of Christmas, New Year and Chinese New Year.

The Singapore Alcove brings together Singapore-related reading and heritage material. The Memories Corner retains a wall made from 5,000 bricks from the former Stamford Road library. These make the stop relevant to the neighbourhood’s cultural history, not merely an air-conditioned place to sit.

Browse according to the library’s visitor rules, keep conversations quiet and do not assume a particular seat or room will be available. Borrowing and reserved facilities have separate conditions; this itinerary does not promise them as part of a casual visit. Use the current Central Library page rather than an old Central Public Library URL.

Keep the afternoon flexible

Choose a book budget before entering the first shop, then give each stop a different purpose: a design subject at Basheer, an unexpected second-hand find at Evernew, an exhibition at Objectifs and local reading at the library. That is more useful than trying to photograph every shelf.

The route includes outdoor street transfers; it is not wholly sheltered just because most of the destinations are indoors. Keep purchases protected from rain, use pedestrian crossings and shorten the plan if browsing takes longer than expected. Public holidays change the overlap substantially, so check each venue rather than applying one opening schedule to the whole neighbourhood.
