Sonic Bistro at SAFRA Choa Chu Kang has eight pastas from $16.90 to $22.90 and five pizzas from $14 to $18, before 9% GST and 10% service charge. Any pasta can be upsized to 1.5 times the portion for $2.
From the merchant's menu: Creamy Carbonara $16.90, Pesto Chicken Mushroom Pasta $17.90 (vegetarian option available), Jumbo Prawn Aglio Olio $17.90, Beef Ragu Pasta $18.90, Squid Ink Seafood Pasta $19.90, Vongole $20.90, Black Pepper Crab Pasta $21.90 and Chilli Crab Pasta $22.90.
The $2 upsize gets you 1.5 times the pasta. For a hungry teenager, that is the cheapest extra food on the menu.
Which pasta to pick
The crab pastas are the local ones. Chilli Crab Pasta at $22.90 is the safe crowd-pleaser, and Black Pepper Crab at $21.90 is for people who like heat without the sweetness.
On a budget, the carbonara at $16.90 is the cheapest. A Google reviewer said the pasta came al dente, which is not a given at a bistro.
The pizzas
Margherita $14, Hawaiian $16, Chicken Floss Pizza $16, Pulled Pork Pizza $17 and Chorizo Sausage Pizza $18. Thin base, and one reviewer said the toppings were generous.
