Our SAF cookhouse tier list, settled: S-tier is Western Wednesday chicken chop, laksa and bak kut teh. A-tier is briyani, ice cream and the charcoal burger. B-tier is hokkien mee, loh mai kai and cai fan. C-tier is bolognese and prata with curry. F-tier is outrations, on its own, forever. If you did NS you already have opinions about this, which is the point.
Western Wednesday chicken chop is not the best food in the cookhouse in any objective sense. It wins because it is the one day of the week you can look forward to, and by the second month that matters more than the actual chop. Laksa is the genuinely good one, gravy that survives the tray. Bak kut teh is the one that felt like a mistake in the roster, in a good way, peppery soup at 7am on a cold morning outside.
A-tier is briyani, ice cream and the charcoal burger, and ice cream is in there purely on morale. B-tier is hokkien mee, loh mai kai and cai fan: fine, reliable, nobody walks faster to the cookhouse for them. C-tier is bolognese and prata with curry, both of which suffer from being cooked in a quantity that does not suit them. Prata reheated at scale is a different food from prata at a stall.
A foil pack of rations eaten cold in the field is the reference point that makes everything else in the cookhouse taste fine. That is genuinely its function. Every ranking above is relative to the pack, which is why an NSF will defend cookhouse laksa to someone who has never had to eat lunch out of a green pouch.
· Western Wednesday is the queue day. Getting there in the first ten minutes is the difference between hot and lukewarm.
· Cookhouse laksa is better than it has any right to be. Do not skip it because the tray looks bad.
· Outrations are best warmed against something. Cold is what makes them F-tier.
· Every camp cooks the same menu differently. Your ranking is allowed to be different from ours.
Western Wednesday chicken chop, laksa and bak kut teh are our S-tier picks. Chicken chop wins on anticipation as much as taste.
Outrations, alone in F-tier. The foil ration pack is the reference point that makes everything in the cookhouse taste acceptable.
Briyani is A-tier alongside ice cream and the charcoal burger. Cai fan is B-tier with hokkien mee and loh mai kai.
The menu rotation is broadly the same, but execution varies a lot by cookhouse, so rankings differ camp to camp.
