KFC La Zi Ji Review 2026: Sichuan Mala Chicken, Bites and Sides Rated

KFC Singapore's La Zi Ji (Sichuan Mala Chicken) was its Chinese New Year 2026 menu, on sale from 14 Jan to 25 Feb 2026, and we gave it a solid thumbs up: the Bites scored 8/10, the Crunch 7/10. The chicken ran a little salty, but the mala kick was real, which is more than most fast food mala can say.

  2. Our scores, item by item
  3. How much it cost and how long it ran
  4. Was it worth it

What KFC's La Zi Ji actually was

La Zi Ji is the Sichuan dish of fried chicken buried in dried chillies and numbing peppercorns. KFC's version was its first go at it in Singapore: fried chicken tossed in dried red chillies, chilli oil and Sichuan peppercorn, sold as the La Zi Ji Crunch (bone-in pieces) and La Zi Ji Bites (boneless). It came with two new sides, Mala Lotus Root Chips and a Mango Pomelo Sago Pie.

The whole thing was dressed for CNY, with the Huat Paws fortune cat blind boxes on the counter. We later ran a giveaway with KFC for this exact menu, and here is how that giveaway worked.

Our scores, item by item

La Zi Ji Crunch, 7/10. It might be a bit salty for some, but the spice legit kicks. The chilli and peppercorn topping is heavy, which is the point.

La Zi Ji Bites, 8/10. Honestly we preferred these over the actual chicken. More coating per bite means more of the mala, and you are not fighting a bone while your lips go numb.

Mala Lotus Root Chips, 6/10. The mala flavour was mild, not too bad, but if you want heat the chicken already has it covered.

Mango Pomelo Sago Pie, 7/10. The surprise of the lot. The filling kind of bursts in your mouth, and a sweet finish after all those chillies.

How much it cost and how long it ran

HungryGoWhere's launch report listed the La Zi Ji Crunch from $4.80 a piece, the Mala Lotus Root Chips and Mango Pomelo Sago Pie from $1.80 each, a La Zi Ji Crunch Bucket at $20.80 and a La Zi Ji Crunch Feast at $39.80. It was sold for dine-in, takeaway and delivery from 14 Jan to 25 Feb 2026.

It was a CNY limited run, so it has been off the menu for months. We have not seen any sign of KFC bringing it back as of 7 Oct 2026. If you miss a KFC item, our discontinued KFC items ranking is where you go to grieve.

Was it worth it

Yes, if you like spice and fried chicken in general, which is what we said on the day. The salt was the one real flaw. The Bites were the order to get, and the pie was the side we would have gone back for.

Good to know

· If it ever comes back, get the Bites over the Crunch: more mala per bite, no bones.

· Order a drink. The salt and the peppercorn numbness build up fast.

· Skip the lotus root chips if you came for heat, the chicken already has plenty.
