Food from the Heart Bedok South: Who Qualifies and When It Opens

Who it is for

Eligibility is set by the charity, and there are three conditions. The household must include at least one Singapore citizen living in the Bedok constituency. The household must not already be receiving a Community Food Pack from another collection centre. And per capita household income must not exceed $800 a month. The Bedok South shop serves around 500 beneficiaries. We wrote about the shop opening in our original Community Shop piece.

Why letting people choose matters

A standard food pack gives everyone the same thing regardless of what they eat, what they can cook, or what they already have at home. That produces waste at one end and unmet need at the other. Letting a household pick its own groceries fixes both, and it removes the part of receiving aid that people find hardest, which is having no say in it. It is a small design change that does a lot of work.

If you want to help rather than receive

Food from the Heart takes in-kind food donations as well as money, and the details of what they can and cannot accept are on their own site. Do not donate anything close to expiry or already opened, which is the most common problem food charities deal with.
