Yes, there is dim sum in Joo Koon. Uncle Leong Signatures at FairPrice Hub, next to Joo Koon MRT, lists 29 dim sum items on its Joo Koon menu, most at $5.30 for three pieces and a Giant Chicken Bun at $3.30, before GST. Weekday bookings from 2pm to 4pm get 10% off food through Eventful Tables.
Uncle Leong is known for crab, and we have covered that to death in our crab ordering guide. What most people miss is that the Joo Koon outlet's menu opens with two pages of dim sum. The MacPherson menu does not have them, so this is a Joo Koon thing.
Joo Koon's Eventful listing has it open from 9.30am to 8.30pm daily. We do not know whether dim sum runs all day, so ask when you book.
Steamed, at $5.30 for three unless noted: BBQ Pork Bun, Creamy Custard Bun, Creamy Yam Paste Bun, Lotus Paste with Egg Yolk Bun, Red Bean Paste Bun, Steamed Prawn Dumpling, Steamed Siew Mai, Chicken Claw, Steamed Pork Ribs, Steamed Beancurd Skin Roll, Pumpkin Crystal Dumpling and Sharks Fin Dumpling. BBQ Pork and Prawn Rice Rolls are $5.30 for three rolls. Giant Chicken Bun $3.30, Glutinous Rice $3.30, Lotus Leaf Rice $4.30.
Fried: Pan Fried Carrot Cake $4.30, Chive and Pork Dumpling, Fried Beancurd Skin Roll, Fried Shrimp Dumpling, Sesame Mango and Prawn Roll, Fried Filo Prawn Ball, Crispy Banana with Red Bean and Sesame Creamy Custard Ball, mostly $5.30. Spring Roll $4.30. The menu says all prices are before GST.
Do the classics first: har gow (prawn dumpling), siew mai, the custard bun and carrot cake. That is $20.20 before GST and a solid plate for two. Add chee cheong fun if you are hungry.
The Sesame Creamy Custard Ball is the dessert move. Two items on our copy of the menu, Baked BBQ Pork Pastry and Egg Tarts, were stickered "not available", so do not set your heart on them. For the zi char side of the menu, see our Uncle Leong guide.
Here is the sleeper: 10% off food on bookings from 2pm to 4pm, Monday to Friday. Each timing has 10 discounted bookings, drinks are not included, and the discount never runs on public holidays. A 2.30pm dim sum tea break on a weekday, at 10% off, is a good use of a Joo Koon afternoon.
