Chili's closed every Singapore outlet on 24 March 2019, ending a 10-year run that started at Tanglin Mall in June 2009. The last three were at Resorts World Sentosa, Clarke Quay Central and JCube. It was one of six childhood restaurants in our post, alongside Cold Stone Creamery, Taco Bell, New York New York, Dairy Queen and Ponderosa.
The goodbye was one quiet Facebook post: as of 24 March, all restaurants in Singapore were closed, after 10 wonderful years. No farewell week, no last-day queue. One of the last outlets was at JCube, which itself closed in 2023, as we covered in Singapore malls that closed down.
That 2009 opening was actually a comeback. Chili's had been here in the 1990s, left, and returned a decade later. So technically it has broken our hearts twice.
Cold Stone Creamery for the waffle cones. Taco Bell, which half of you do not remember. New York New York, which we totally forgot about until we made this post. Dairy Queen Blizzards. And Ponderosa, the one you need to ask your parents about.
Rent is a big part of why places like these go. Leases keep climbing and a lot of F&B businesses do not survive five years. The ones that stay are usually the ones that keep changing.
· Chili's still runs outlets in Malaysia, but its own outlet list shows none in Johor Bahru. The nearest are in KL and the Klang Valley.
· If a place you love is quiet on a weekday, go more often. That is honestly how they survive.
