5 More Singapore Malls That Closed: HarbourFront Centre, Gek Poh

Five Singapore malls that have closed: Pearls Centre came down in 2016, HarbourFront Centre shut on 27 July 2026, Bedok Point ceased operations on 1 July 2022, Scotts Shopping Centre closed in 2007, and Gek Poh Shopping Centre closed on 31 August 2025. The twist is Gek Poh, the one plenty of people had never heard of. It is the only one on this list that is coming back.

Pearls Centre and Scotts Shopping Centre: the old ones

Pearls Centre on Eu Tong Sen Street was a 22-storey block with a mall, flats upstairs and the Yangtze cinema, which opened on 27 January 1977. The Singapore Land Authority acquired the building in 2012 for the Thomson-East Coast Line, everyone had moved out by 2015, and it was demolished in 2016. If you remember Yangtze, you remember Yangtze. We will leave it there.

Scotts Shopping Centre opened in 1982 on Scotts Road, and in 1985 it got Picnic, Singapore's first air-conditioned food court. Think about how many food court meals you have eaten in aircon since. It closed and came down in 2007, and Scotts Square stands there now. Part 1 of this series, with JCube and Peace Centre, is our 5 Singapore malls that closed down.

HarbourFront Centre: gone this year

This is the fresh one. HarbourFront Centre closed on 27 July 2026. It started life as the World Trade Centre in 1978 and reopened as HarbourFront Centre in 2003, and for most of us it was the place you ate before your ferry to Batam.

The ferry terminal moved to an interim building at 5 HarbourFront Avenue on 15 July 2026, so the trips still run. The site is becoming a 33-storey office and retail building with a raised park, due in the first half of 2031. VivoCity next door is still very much there, and we wrote about what VivoCity felt like on your first visit.

Bedok Point and Gek Poh

Bedok Point soft-opened in December 2010, officially opened on 26 April 2011 and ceased operations on 1 July 2022. Eleven years. It lost the fight to Bedok Mall, which sits right on top of the MRT and the bus interchange. A condo called Sky Eden is going up on the site. The Teo Heng karaoke after school was the whole point, and you know it.

Gek Poh Shopping Centre in Jurong West is the one the caption is about.

If you did not live near it, fair enough, it was a neighbourhood mall. All the shops closed on 31 August 2025 so it could be rebuilt next to the upcoming Gek Poh station on the Jurong Region Line, and the revamped centre is due by the third quarter of 2028. So this one is not a goodbye. It is a see you in 2028.

Good to know

· HarbourFront ferries now leave from the interim terminal at 5 HarbourFront Avenue, about 70m from the old one.

· Gek Poh is coming back, targeted for the third quarter of 2028, alongside its Jurong Region Line station.

· Next up: what Bedok Point was like in the 2000s. Follow @eventful_sg to catch it.
