Best Matcha in Singapore: Our Tier List, S to C

Best Matcha in Singapore: Our Tier List, S to C

We ranked eleven Singapore matcha spots into four tiers and the top three are Haus Coffee, Hellu Coffee and Gotcha Matcha. A-tier is Starbucks, HVALA and Sweedy. B-tier is Creamie Sippies and SugarBelly. C-tier is 108 Matcha Saro, Hello Arigato and Heytea. Yes, Starbucks made A-tier and a specialist made C. That is the whole reason to publish a list instead of a nice write-up of every shop.

S-tier: Haus Coffee, Hellu Coffee, Gotcha Matcha

These three are the ones we would cross town for. Gotcha Matcha is the purist pick and it knows it, the cup literally tells you matcha is not basic.

Haus and Hellu both do the layered iced version well, which is harder than it looks: the give-away in a bad one is a bitter first sip and a milky last one because nobody stirred it properly at the counter.

If you like your matcha grassy rather than sweet, start at S-tier and work down. If you like it sweet, you will disagree with this entire list and that is fine.

A-tier to C-tier, and the Starbucks problem

A-tier: Starbucks, HVALA, Sweedy. Starbucks in A-tier annoys people and it should not. Their matcha is sweet and consistent, and consistency is worth something when you are ordering on the way to work. HVALA is the traditional-leaning one, Sweedy the pretty one.

B-tier: Creamie Sippies, SugarBelly. Both fine, both leaning dessert rather than tea.

C-tier: 108 Matcha Saro, Hello Arigato, Heytea. C-tier is not bad, it is the tier where you are paying for something other than the matcha. Nothing here is undrinkable and we would still finish all three.

Good to know

· Ask them to stir it before the lid goes on. Layered iced matcha separates and the first sip carries all the bitterness.

· Sweetness is the real variable, not grade. If you dislike a shop's matcha, order it at half sugar once before writing it off.

· Gotcha Matcha is the one to try first if you want to know what unsweetened matcha actually tastes like.
